IEMT
Integral Eye Movement Technique

Be The Change You Wish to See

What is Integral Eye Movement Technique?

Integral Eye Movement Technique (IEMT) is a structured approach to working with emotional responses, identity and recurring patterns that may be affecting how we experience ourselves and the world around us.

Developed by Andrew T. Austin, IEMT explores how we learn to feel the way we do, how we come to experience ourselves in particular ways, and why certain emotional and behavioural patterns can continue long after the experiences that originally shaped them.

Through a combination of carefully sequenced questions, observation and guided eye movements, IEMT aims to bring about changes in how difficult experiences are represented and responded to.

Unlike approaches that require extensive discussion or analysis of past events, IEMT does not require revisiting painful memories in detail or repeatedly telling your story. The focus is less on what happened and more on how the experience continues to affect you today.

How Did I Learn to Feel This Way?

Working with Emotional Imprints

Sometimes we find ourselves experiencing emotional reactions that seem disproportionate to what is happening in the present moment.

A situation, conversation, memory or even a particular tone of voice may trigger anxiety, sadness, anger, shame or another familiar feeling.

Within the IEMT model, these responses are understood through the concept of emotional imprinting - the way particular emotional and bodily responses become associated with earlier experiences.

Using specific eye-movement patterns, we explore how these learned emotional responses are represented, with the intention of reducing their intensity and influence in the present here and now.

How Did I Learn to Be This Way?

Working with Identity Imprints

Our experiences can shape more than how we feel. They can also influence how we understand ourselves. Over time, a repeated emotional experience may become part of our identity.

For example, there is a subtle but important difference between saying:

“I feel anxious in certain situations.” & “I am an anxious person.”

IEMT recognises this distinction between what we experience emotionally and what we have come to believe or assume about who we are. Identity work explores these deeply familiar patterns of self-experience, creating opportunities for greater flexibility in how we relate to ourselves.

Why Do Patterns Keep Repeating?

Understanding Patterns of Chronicity

Another distinctive aspect of IEMT is its exploration of what Andrew T. Austin describes as the Patterns of Chronicity. These are recurring patterns of attention, language, behaviour and response that may contribute to difficulties continuing, even when we consciously want things to change.

By recognising these patterns, IEMT offers a way of exploring not only the emotional experience itself, but also some of the processes that may be maintaining it. The intention is to support greater awareness, flexibility and choice rather than simply managing the same responses repeatedly.

What Can IEMT Help You Explore?

People seek IEMT for many different reasons, including:

  • Recurring anxiety, worry and emotional overwhelm

  • Unwanted emotional reactions and triggers

  • Painful memories that continue to carry emotional intensity

  • Feelings of shame, guilt or inadequacy

  • Persistent negative beliefs about themselves

  • Repeating emotional or relational patterns

  • Difficulties moving beyond previous experiences

  • Feeling stuck in familiar ways of thinking, feeling or responding

What Happens During a Session?

We begin by deciding what you would like to change and identifying the emotional feelings, memories or recurring patterns that may be relevant. I then guide you through structured questions followed by, appropriate, specific eye-movement sequences. You remain aware and involved throughout the session, and we work at a pace that feels appropriate for you. There is no requirement to disclose details of a difficult past experience for IEMT to bring about positive change.
